Pakistan Formulating Strategy for Engagement with Donald Trump on Defense, Energy, and Trade

The federal government of Pakistan is finalizing a key strategy for engaging with the incoming Trump administration on critical issues, including defense, trade, health, and energy. This was disclosed during an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). The Ministry has instructed relevant departments to submit their feedback and proposals urgently to prepare a comprehensive presentation on these matters.

In addition, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Washington has been in discussions with US officials to schedule the third round of the Energy Security Dialogue, tentatively set for mid-January. However, there are concerns regarding the timing of the dialogue, given the political transition. Some officials worry that the incoming administration may not honor previous agreements made by the current administration.

This dialogue will focus on vital energy-related issues, such as the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, renewable energy projects, LNG infrastructure, and encouraging private-sector investment in Pakistan’s energy sector. Feedback from the Energy and Petroleum Divisions is awaited to finalize the timing of the discussions.
