Asad Umar’s health condition worsened while he was in Lahore’s Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), leading to his transfer to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) hospital. His lawyer reported that he suffered a heart attack in the courtroom.
On November 11, 2023, Asad Umar announced his complete departure from politics and his resignation from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Umar explained his decision to leave politics after over a decade, citing disagreements with the party’s confrontational approach towards state institutions. He expressed gratitude to those who supported him, particularly the NA-54 team and voters who elected him twice.

Earlier, in May 2023, Umar had stepped down as PTI’s secretary general following a crackdown on the party after violent protests erupted due to the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan. Despite stepping down from his position, Umar had not resigned from the party or politics at that time. He stated that his resignation was not under pressure and called for a transparent inquiry into the May 9 riots.
