The Ministry of Interior has approved the deployment of Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel in Sindh during Muharram, responding to security concerns raised by the provincial government. The request, submitted by the Sindh Home Department, was approved under Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 to assist civil administration in maintaining peace and security.
According to the interior ministry’s order, the deployment will be contingent upon ground conditions, with provincial authorities maintaining control over the deployment process. The Sindh Home Department has collaborated with military officials to outline a deployment plan for Muharram, ensuring that military units are stationed as necessary following consultations among relevant stakeholders.

Muharram, observed by Shia Muslims worldwide, commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala. In Pakistan, it is a month of mourning marked by processions and gatherings, necessitating heightened security measures due to past incidents of violence targeting imambargahs and processions.
In a related development, the Punjab government had previously requested the interior ministry to block internet services and social media apps from Muharram 6 to 11 to prevent the spread of hate speech and misinformation. However, the federal government declined this request and emphasized enhancing security measures instead.
As preparations continue for Muharramul Haram, the deployment of additional security forces underscores Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful observance of this important religious period amidst heightened security concerns.
