The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reinstated the appeals filed by Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), challenging his convictions in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia corruption cases. The decision was announced by an IHC division bench led by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb. Nawaz Sharif submitted the petition after returning to Pakistan from a self-imposed exile in London that lasted four years.
During the hearing, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) informed the bench that it had no objections to the revival of Nawaz Sharif’s appeals. When questioned about whether NAB would defend the accountability court’s judgments against the PML-N leader in the upcoming proceedings, the anti-corruption watchdog stated that it would review the case and evidence before presenting its arguments.

Earlier in the month, the IHC had granted protective bail to Nawaz Sharif on October 19, allowing him to return to Pakistan, and directed him to appear before the court on October 24. On October 24, Nawaz appeared before the IHC, and as NAB did not oppose his pleas, his bail was extended until October 26 (today).
Additionally, the caretaker government of Punjab has approved the suspension of Nawaz Sharif’s sentence in the Al-Azizia reference.
