Honor's Latest Phone Offers Eye-Controlled Functionality

Honor, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, unveiled its latest flagship, the Magic 6, at the Qualcomm 2023 Snapdragon Summit. Among the various features discussed at the event, one notable capability is the ability to control the phone using your eyes.

In a keynote presentation, a demonstration of this technology was shown through a rendering. It depicted a woman using her phone, with a section of the Uber app displayed at the top of the screen, similar to a Live Activity. By altering the direction of her gaze, she effortlessly expanded the app to full screen.

Honor refers to this technology as “Magic Capsule” and describes it as “eye-tracking based multimodal interaction.” The actual implementation and functionality of this feature remain to be seen, as the demo video is not a real-life representation. While it may appear more as a show-off feature, it could potentially be useful in scenarios where hands are occupied or for individuals with disabilities.

The term “multi-modal” suggests that gaze tracking is just one aspect of the system and may be combined with other gestures to ensure reliable operation, similar to how eye-tracking is used in some PSVR 2 games.

Although Honor has not provided a specific release date for the Magic 6, Qualcomm has indicated that phones featuring its latest flagship chipset will start appearing in the coming weeks.
