At least 70 people fell ill after eating suspected contaminated food at an engagement ceremony in Swari Bazaar, Buner, prompting authorities to rush the affected guests to hospital for medical treatment.
According to local reports, the incident occurred after food was served at the engagement ceremony of Waliullah’s daughter. A large number of guests reportedly developed health problems after consuming the meal.
Many of those attending the ceremony had travelled from Chagharzai and Paggyal to participate in the family event.
Women and Children Among Those Affected
Women and children made up a significant portion of those affected by the suspected food poisoning.
Following the incident, the patients were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Buner for medical attention.
Medical Superintendent Dr Farrukh Syed said medical staff immediately provided treatment to the affected people.
According to the hospital administration, 20 patients were discharged after receiving treatment, while the remaining 50 patients continue to receive medical care at the hospital.
50 Patients Remain Under Treatment
Hospital authorities are continuing to monitor the condition of the remaining patients.
The affected individuals reportedly developed health problems after consuming food served at the engagement ceremony, although the exact cause of the illness has not yet been established.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and preparation of food served at large public and family gatherings.
Further assessment may be required to determine whether the food was contaminated and what caused the guests to fall ill.
Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner Visit Hospital
Following the incident, the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner visited the hospital to review the situation and meet officials dealing with the affected patients.
They directed the local administration and hospital authorities to ensure that the victims receive the best possible medical treatment.
Officials are continuing to monitor the situation as the remaining patients receive care at the DHQ Hospital.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of maintaining proper food safety and hygiene standards during large gatherings, particularly where food is prepared and served to a large number of people.
Authorities may further investigate the circumstances surrounding the illness to determine the source of the suspected contamination.
