Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced that the pilot project for a digital parking system is nearing completion. The system is expected to become operational within the next few days.
The new system will be introduced at designated parking lots operated by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). It will use digital technology to improve parking fee collection and monitoring.
Murtaza Wahab clarified that the KMC has already abolished parking fee collection on all KMC roads. He said the new automated receipt system will only apply to designated parking lots.
According to the mayor, the digital system aims to bring greater transparency to parking fee collection. It is also designed to protect citizens from being charged extra or unauthorised amounts by parking contractors.
The automated receipt system will ensure that parking transactions are properly recorded. This will help reduce revenue leakage and limit the possibility of funds being misappropriated.
The Smart Parking system will also introduce digital ticketing for motorists. Citizens will be able to make payments through cashless options, reducing dependence on manual cash collection.
The system is expected to provide real-time information about parking availability. This feature could help motorists find available spaces more easily and reduce the time spent searching for parking.
