The federal government’s spending on fuel has increased sharply over the past five years.
Fuel expenses rose from Rs. 7.52 billion in FY2020-21 to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25.
The figures were shared in a document presented before Parliament.
They cover fuel spending by federal ministries, departments, and attached institutions.
The data shows a steady increase in overall fuel expenditure.
However, the largest rise was recorded during FY2022-23.
In FY2020-21, fuel spending stood at Rs. 7.52 billion.
The amount increased slightly to Rs. 8.35 billion in FY2021-22.
Fuel expenditure then jumped to Rs. 15.66 billion in FY2022-23.
This was nearly double the amount recorded during the previous financial year.
Spending remained almost unchanged during FY2023-24.
Federal institutions spent around Rs. 15.67 billion on fuel during that year.
The expenditure increased again in FY2024-25.
It reached Rs. 21.77 billion, marking the highest level in the five-year period.
Overall, fuel spending increased by around 190 percent between FY2020-21 and FY2024-25.
The increase highlights the growing cost of fuel for government operations.
The government attributed the higher expenditure mainly to rising fuel prices.
Its response did not provide a separate explanation for higher fuel consumption.
Higher fuel prices have increased operating costs for public institutions.
These costs affect ministries, departments, and other government-linked institutions that use vehicles and machinery.
The figures also show that fuel expenses can change significantly between financial years.
The sharp increase in FY2022-23 was followed by a period of stability.
The latest increase was recorded in FY2024-25.
Fuel spending rose by more than Rs. 6 billion compared with the previous financial year.
The government’s explanation focuses on price increases rather than consumption growth.
This suggests that higher fuel rates were the main factor behind the rising expenditure.
The figures were presented to Parliament as part of the government’s response.
They provide an overview of fuel-related spending across federal institutions.
The data also reflects the financial pressure created by higher fuel costs.
Any future changes in fuel prices could affect government operating expenses further.
