Federal Cabinet Takes Major Step for Pakistan’s Youth

The federal cabinet has given in-principle approval to the National Adolescent and Youth Policy. The proposed Youth Policy aims to create a national framework for young people.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired the cabinet meeting in Islamabad. The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination presented the proposed framework.

The Youth Policy focuses on four major areas. These include education, employment, participation, and the environment.

The government wants to improve opportunities for young people through the proposed framework. It also aims to include youth concerns in national policy-making.

The proposed policy is designed to improve access to economic and social opportunities. It seeks to provide young people with greater opportunities for development.

The government also plans to establish two institutions under the policy. These include the Pakistan Youth Development Council and the Federal Adolescent and Youth Agency.

These proposed bodies would support the implementation of the Youth Policy. They are expected to play a role in coordinating youth-related initiatives.

The cabinet was also briefed about the consultation process. Officials conducted 32,145 surveys across Pakistan during the policy preparation.

The government also sought opinions from more than 200,000 young people. Their views were considered during the development of the proposed framework.

The consultation process was aimed at understanding the needs of young people. It also provided an opportunity to gather feedback from different parts of the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to include cabinet members’ suggestions. These recommendations will be incorporated into the proposed policy.

The latest decision represents an initial step toward the national Youth Policy. The framework will need further action before its full implementation.

The cabinet meeting also covered several other government matters. Members reviewed and ratified decisions taken by different cabinet committees.

The cabinet ratified decisions of the Cabinet Committee on State Owned Enterprises. The committee had met on July 9, 2026.

It also approved decisions made by the Economic Coordination Committee. These decisions were taken during its meeting on August 14, 2026.

The cabinet further ratified decisions from the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases. The committee held meetings on June 18, July 30, August 5, and August 18.

The proposed Youth Policy places young people at the center of several national priorities. Its four focus areas cover education, jobs, civic participation, and environmental issues.

The government’s consultation exercise also reflects a focus on youth participation. More than 200,000 young people were approached during the policy formulation process.

The next stage will involve incorporating the cabinet’s recommendations. Further details about implementation will depend on the policy’s final approval.

For now, the in-principle approval provides a framework for continued work. The Youth Policy could guide future government initiatives targeting adolescents and young people.
