The NEPRA has granted electricity distribution and solar power supply licenses to DHA Energy Supply Company (DESCO) for DHA City Karachi. The approval makes DESCO the first company in Pakistan to receive both types of licenses.
The licenses were officially handed over during a ceremony held at the NEPRA headquarters in Islamabad. NEPRA Member Maqsood Anwar presented the approvals to representatives of DHA Energy Supply Company.
The newly issued licenses will allow DESCO to establish and operate its own electricity distribution network in DHA City Karachi. The company will also be able to supply electricity generated through solar energy and other approved sources.
According to officials, the approval is an important step toward developing an independent power infrastructure for the housing project. The initiative is expected to support a reliable electricity supply as DHA City Karachi continues to expand.
DESCO said the licensing process was started in 2017. The company worked closely with NEPRA throughout the approval process to complete the required regulatory procedures.
The company also shared updates about its future energy plans. DESCO said the feasibility study for its planned grid station is almost complete. Construction work on the grid station is expected to begin in early 2027.
The development of the grid station is considered a key part of building a dedicated power system for DHA City Karachi. The project will help improve electricity management and support future energy requirements.
DESCO further announced that it has signed a Power Acquisition Agreement with Lucky Cement. Under the agreement, the company will acquire electricity for its distribution network.
The company said the agreement will contribute to maintaining a stable power supply for consumers in DHA City Karachi. It added that the combination of electricity distribution and solar supply approvals will provide more flexibility in managing energy needs.
The approval from NEPRA represents a significant milestone for Pakistan’s power sector. It allows a private company to manage electricity distribution while also incorporating renewable energy sources into its supply system.
Energy experts believe such initiatives can encourage investment in alternative power solutions. The use of solar energy may also help reduce dependence on traditional electricity generation sources.
