A Senate Standing Committee has discussed a proposal to increase the CSS Age Limit for candidates appearing in the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination. However, the committee did not reach a final decision after reviewing the proposal and other civil service reforms.
The meeting focused on issues related to the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), the CSS examination, and Pakistan’s civil service recruitment system. Committee members also discussed several recommendations aimed at improving the country’s bureaucracy.
The proposal to revise the CSS Age Limit became one of the main topics of discussion. Some members supported reviewing the existing age criteria, while officials briefing the committee expressed concerns about raising the upper age limit.
According to the officials, increasing the age limit could reduce the number of years civil servants spend in government service. They argued that this could affect long-term administrative efficiency and the overall performance of the civil service.
The committee also examined previous recommendations regarding CSS reforms and recruitment procedures. Members reviewed different suggestions but agreed that more discussion was needed before making any policy changes.
During the meeting, the committee chair referred to recruitment systems used in other countries. He noted that many nations have moved away from traditional CSS-style recruitment models and introduced more modern methods for hiring civil servants.
The discussion highlighted the need to evaluate Pakistan’s recruitment system in line with changing administrative requirements. However, no final recommendation regarding the CSS Age Limit was approved during the session.
Earlier, the Federal Public Service Commission responded to reports claiming that CSS applications had declined by 45 percent. The commission rejected those claims and said the comparison was misleading because it did not consider the complete recruitment process.
According to FPSC data, 64,081 candidates registered for the 2025 Multiple Choice Preliminary Test (MPT). Out of those, 18,139 candidates submitted applications for the written examination.
The commission further stated that 12,792 candidates appeared in the written examination. Among them, 354 candidates qualified for the next stage, while 342 candidates successfully cleared the interview process.
Finally, 170 candidates were allocated to different civil service groups after completing all stages of the recruitment process.
The debate over the CSS Age Limit remains an important issue for many aspirants preparing for the competitive examination. While the committee has not reached a decision, the discussion reflects ongoing efforts to review Pakistan’s civil service recruitment system.

Any future change to the age limit or recruitment process will require further consultation and formal approval before implementation. Until then, the existing CSS examination rules and eligibility criteria remain unchanged.
