Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town Chairman Dr. Fawad Ahmed has warned that Karachi’s University Road could become “a disaster waiting to happen” if heavy monsoon rains arrive before ongoing infrastructure projects are completed.
Speaking at a press conference at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town Municipal Corporation council hall, Dr. Ahmed expressed concern over delays in the reconstruction of the road section between Hassan Square and Nipa, where work related to the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is still underway.
He said extensive excavation for the Red Line BRT has left the road full of pits and uneven surfaces, creating serious safety risks for commuters. According to him, heavy rainfall during the monsoon season could worsen the situation, making travel difficult and increasing the chances of accidents and urban flooding.
Dr. Ahmed also criticized the proposed flyover near Disco Bakery, describing it as unnecessary and impractical. He argued that the project could increase traffic congestion instead of easing it, as a large volume of traffic from University Road has already been diverted to Shabbir Usmani Road.
He urged the Sindh government to reconsider the flyover project and instead focus on removing encroachments to improve traffic flow in the area. He added that the planned K-IV augmentation water supply line is also expected to pass through Shabbir Usmani Road, which could further complicate construction of the proposed flyover.
According to Dr. Ahmed, these concerns have already been conveyed to the Mayor of Karachi. He called for better coordination between authorities to prevent further disruption to commuters and ensure timely completion of infrastructure projects before the peak monsoon season.
During the press conference, the chairman also presented the performance report of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town and announced a Rs4.7795 billion budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year. He said 75 percent of the total budget has been allocated to development projects aimed at improving municipal services and infrastructure.
