The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for eight districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and flash flooding due to glacier melting and ongoing heavy rainfall.
According to the authority, Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra are among the districts facing an increased risk as water levels continue to rise in rivers, streams, and seasonal nullahs.
PDMA warned that rising temperatures, combined with persistent rainfall, could accelerate glacier melting and increase the likelihood of glacial lake outburst floods. The authority said nearby communities could face serious risks if water levels continue to rise.
The disaster management authority has directed all concerned deputy commissioners to closely monitor vulnerable areas and activate effective early warning systems to ensure timely alerts for residents living in high-risk locations.
PDMA also instructed district administrations to ensure the availability of rescue teams, emergency equipment, and relief resources, particularly in Kohistan, Mansehra, and Swat, where the flood threat is considered significant.
In addition, officials have been asked to complete preparations for possible evacuations in Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Kohistan, and Mansehra if the situation worsens. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay informed through official advisories and cooperate with emergency services if evacuation orders are issued.
