The UAE has officially launched Jaywan, its first national card scheme, marking a major step in the country’s digital payments sector. The new payment network is now being introduced through banks, licensed financial institutions, and exchange houses across the country.
The launch was formally announced by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He serves as the Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Chief of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Central Bank of the UAE.
The nationwide rollout will happen in phases over the coming months. Different financial institutions will gradually make Jaywan cards available to their customers. The initiative is expected to expand payment options while strengthening the country’s financial infrastructure.
First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) has already introduced a Jaywan debit card for eligible account holders. Customers can apply through the FAB Mobile app or by visiting a bank branch.
Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) is also preparing to launch Jaywan prepaid cards. These cards will require users to load funds before making purchases. They will also support contactless payments and tokenization through compatible mobile wallets.
Network International has enabled online payment acceptance for Jaywan across thousands of merchants. This move will allow customers to use the new cards for online shopping at a growing number of businesses.
The new payment scheme supports several everyday banking services. Users can make in-store purchases, shop online, withdraw cash from ATMs, and use compatible digital wallets. International transactions will depend on the specific card type and the rules set by the issuing institution.
Jaywan is operated by Al Etihad Payments, a subsidiary of the Central Bank. The system processes, authorizes, and routes domestic card transactions within the UAE. This approach is designed to improve payment efficiency and strengthen national control over payment infrastructure.
Officials said the new scheme will also help keep domestic payment data within the country. This supports the government’s broader efforts to improve security and build a stronger financial ecosystem.
During the launch, Sheikh Mansour said the project reflects the UAE‘s commitment to creating a more competitive and resilient financial sector. He added that the initiative will encourage innovation, expand financial inclusion, and strengthen the country’s position as a global financial hub.
Ali Al Najjar, Chief Executive Officer of Al Ansari Exchange, described Jaywan as a complete national payment solution. He said it offers secure and reliable payment options across point-of-sale terminals, e-commerce platforms, ATMs, and digital wallets.
The FAB Jaywan debit card includes 3D Secure authentication for online purchases. It also features Chip and PIN technology for secure in-store transactions.
