The Sindh government has announced a large-scale solar energy initiative to support low-income households across the province. Under the new program, mini solar kits will be distributed to 275,000 deserving families to improve access to electricity and promote the use of renewable energy.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon announced the project on Tuesday. He said the initiative has been launched on the instructions of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The provincial government has allocated Rs. 18.20 billion for the scheme.
According to officials, the project is designed to benefit families living in both off-grid and grid-connected areas. The government aims to improve energy access for households that face electricity shortages or have limited access to reliable power.
The Sindh government said 132,000 families from off-grid areas will receive mini solar kits under the project. These are locations where electricity infrastructure is unavailable or remains limited.
Another 143,000 families from grid-connected areas will also benefit from the initiative. Officials said the scheme will give priority to low-income households and people living in remote parts of the province.
Each selected family will receive a complete mini solar system. The package includes a 180-watt solar panel, batteries, fans, and energy-efficient bulbs. These items are expected to provide basic electricity for everyday household needs.
The government believes the solar kits will help reduce electricity-related challenges faced by many families. The systems can provide power for lighting and other essential household activities, especially in areas with unreliable electricity supply.
Officials also said the project supports the wider use of renewable energy. Solar power can help reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while lowering electricity costs for many households.
Sharjeel Memon said the initiative reflects the provincial government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of deserving families. He added that expanding access to clean and affordable energy remains an important priority.
The Sindh government has already started implementing the project. According to officials, more than 15,000 solar kits have already been distributed to eligible families during the initial phase.
The remaining kits will be distributed in stages across different districts. Authorities said the phased approach will help ensure smooth implementation and transparent distribution of the equipment.
The government expects the project to improve the quality of life for thousands of families. Better access to electricity can support education, household activities, and overall daily living conditions.
