Elon Musk has announced plans to make X’s entire codebase open source after the company completes a detailed security vulnerability review. The move is expected to increase transparency around how the social media platform operates.
According to Elon Musk, X will release the full codebase “with no exceptions” once the security checks are completed. The company believes the step will provide users, developers, and researchers with a clearer understanding of how the platform works.
The planned release will cover the technology behind important features of X. These include post rankings, content recommendations, and moderation systems. The move could provide more insight into how the platform decides which posts users see.
However, X will not publish the code immediately. The company first wants to complete a security review to identify and fix possible vulnerabilities.
Publishing a large platform’s source code can create security risks if weaknesses are exposed before proper protections are in place. The review process is intended to reduce those risks before the code becomes publicly available.
X has not announced a specific date for completing the security review. The company also has not shared a timeline for releasing the complete codebase.
Elon Musk also said X wants independent third-party reviewers to verify that the publicly released code matches the code running on the company’s servers.
This verification process would go beyond simply uploading code online. Independent experts would be able to check whether the public version accurately represents the technology used by the live platform.
If implemented, the plan could make X one of the most transparent major social media platforms from a technical perspective.
X has previously shared parts of its recommendation algorithm. The company released information about how its “For You” feed works, including systems that collect, rank, and filter posts.
The recommendation system uses content from accounts users follow as well as posts from a broader global collection. It also uses artificial intelligence models to predict engagement and arrange content rankings.
However, earlier disclosures did not reveal the complete operation of the platform. Areas such as training data, advertising systems, and other internal processes remained undisclosed.
The latest announcement represents a much broader approach. Instead of releasing only parts of the recommendation system, X plans to open its complete platform codebase.
Elon Musk has also previously discussed publishing algorithm updates through GitHub on a regular basis. The proposed open-source strategy follows his broader focus on transparency in technology.
The move also connects with Musk’s approach at xAI, where some AI models have been released as open models. However, opening a social media platform’s full codebase presents different challenges.
X will need to balance transparency with security, privacy concerns, abuse prevention, and operational risks.
For now, the announcement remains a future plan. X has not confirmed when the review will end or when the full code will be available.
