The Punjab government has launched a major workforce development initiative to train nearly 90,000 students by 2029. The program is designed to improve technical education and prepare young people for jobs in industries with high demand for skilled workers.
The six-year project, called the Improving Workforce Readiness in Punjab Project, started in 2023 and will continue until 2029. It aims to reduce the gap between technical education and the needs of the labor market.
According to official documents, the project will introduce modern training programs based on a detailed skills mapping study. These programs will focus on practical learning and industry requirements instead of traditional classroom methods.
A key part of the initiative is the upgrade of 19 technical and vocational training institutes across Punjab. Sixteen of these institutes are managed by the Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA), while three are operated by the Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC).
These institutions will be transformed into Centers of Excellence. The upgraded facilities will provide specialized training that matches the needs of modern industries and employers.
The project will focus on eight priority sectors that are important for the province’s economy. These sectors include automotive, information and communication technology, tourism, food processing, textile, construction, healthcare, and light engineering.
Officials believe these industries will continue creating employment opportunities in the coming years. By providing industry-focused training, the project aims to help students find stable and sustainable jobs after completing their education.
