Punjab Starts Strict Helmet Crackdown, Bikes to Be Impounded

The Punjab Traffic Police has launched a province-wide crackdown on motorcyclists riding without helmets, introducing stricter penalties to improve road safety. Under the new enforcement policy, riders found without helmets will not only receive traffic challans but will also have their motorcycles impounded for 24 hours. The initiative is part of the provincial government’s efforts to reduce road accidents and encourage safer driving practices across Punjab.

According to traffic authorities, wearing a helmet has now become mandatory for all motorcyclists throughout the province. Officials said the latest campaign aims to achieve 100 percent compliance with helmet regulations. Traffic police personnel have been instructed to strictly implement the rules, ensuring that every rider follows the safety requirements regardless of the city or district in which they are traveling.

Under the revised policy, any motorcyclist caught riding without a helmet will face an immediate traffic challan, while the motorcycle will also be taken into custody for one day. Authorities believe the additional penalty will encourage riders to take helmet laws more seriously and help reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities caused by road accidents involving motorcycles.

The crackdown also includes continued action against motorists violating lane discipline. Traffic officials revealed that more than 20,000 motorcycles were impounded during the previous month for crossing lane lines and violating traffic rules. The department said strict enforcement against lane discipline violations will continue alongside the helmet campaign to promote responsible driving and improve traffic management across the province.

Officials emphasized that the primary objective of the campaign is to save lives rather than generate fines. They urged all motorcyclists to wear certified helmets every time they ride and to strictly follow traffic laws, including lane discipline. According to the authorities, consistent compliance with these safety measures can significantly reduce the severity of accidents and create safer roads for everyone.

Meanwhile, Punjab has also introduced a new digital challan system across the province, including Lahore, to enhance transparency in traffic law enforcement. Under the upgraded system, every traffic challan will now include complete digital evidence, such as photographs and videos, making the enforcement process more transparent and reducing disputes over traffic violations. Officials believe the combination of stricter enforcement and digital monitoring will strengthen road safety across Punjab.
