Lahore Declares Major Roads Off-Limits Without Helmets

Lahore Traffic Police has intensified its crackdown on helmet violations, declaring several major roads across the city as no-go zones for motorcyclists without helmets. The move comes after the department conducted its first artificial intelligence (AI)-based survey, which revealed a remarkably high helmet compliance rate on Lahore’s model roads.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Abdul Rahim Shirazi said the survey was carried out using AI technology integrated with cameras of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA). Monitoring was conducted at 17 major intersections across the provincial capital to assess helmet usage among motorcyclists during peak traffic hours.

According to the survey findings, a total of 264,112 motorcycles passed through the monitored intersections. Out of these, 256,473 riders were wearing helmets, while 7,639 riders were found without protective headgear. The data showed that 97.11% of motorcyclists on Lahore’s model roads were complying with helmet regulations.

The CTO announced that The Mall, Jail Road, Canal Road, and Cantt have now been designated as strict no-go zones for riders without helmets. Under the new policy, motorcyclists found traveling on these roads without helmets will face strict enforcement measures. Authorities also plan to extend the zero-tolerance policy to roads connected to these model corridors.

Traffic officials say the crackdown is aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic-related fatalities. According to the CTO, the increased use of helmets has already contributed to a 40% reduction in severe head injury cases, highlighting the importance of helmet compliance in protecting motorcyclists.

The Lahore Traffic Police has urged all riders to wear standard safety helmets and follow traffic rules. Officials said the AI-based monitoring system will continue to be used to identify violations and strengthen enforcement efforts across the city.
