MQM Demands President Zardari Resign Over Sindh Crisis

MQM-Pakistan has sharply criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), calling for the resignation of President Asif Ali Zardari and the party’s senior leadership over what it described as years of poor governance, corruption, and failure to resolve Sindh’s growing problems.

Speaking to the media, Leader of the Opposition Ali Khurshidi accused the PPP government of failing to provide basic services to the people of Sindh. He said residents continue to face frequent power outages, gas shortages, and an ongoing water crisis despite the party remaining in power for years.

His remarks came in response to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s recent statement in the National Assembly, where he urged MQM’s federal ministers to step down. Khurshidi replied by saying that if the PPP genuinely believes injustice is being done to Sindh, it should first present the resignation of President Asif Ali Zardari and the entire PPP leadership. He added that MQM would immediately ask its two federal ministers to resign in return.

The MQM leader also questioned the PPP’s electoral strength, claiming the party depends on influential political families rather than public performance to secure votes. He alleged that without the support of powerful local groups, the PPP would lose its majority in several constituencies.

Khurshidi further criticized the provincial government for failing to address Sindh’s longstanding issues. He questioned why the PPP had not actively fought for the province’s rights and said MQM would support the party if it launched a movement regarding the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) dispute.

He also claimed that several legal petitions had been filed against the PPP and argued that the Sindh government had failed to introduce effective policies to solve public problems. According to him, genuine improvements cannot be achieved without transferring greater authority to local governments.

Criticizing the provincial budget, Khurshidi said it was approved without meaningful debate and warned it would worsen Sindh’s economic challenges. He also alleged that Rs15 billion allocated to MQM by the federal government had been withheld by the Sindh government for two years. He further claimed that allocating Rs674 billion to the Mayor of Karachi could help resolve many of the city’s civic issues while accusing the provincial administration of widespread corruption.
