Lahore authorities are preparing a major upgrade of Defence Mor in an effort to reduce chronic traffic congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
The proposed changes follow a series of inspections and consultations led by Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, who has been working with relevant agencies to identify long-term solutions for improving traffic flow in the area.
As part of the plan, officials have proposed widening the turning lane from 22 feet to 33 feet. The redesign is expected to significantly boost the intersection’s traffic-handling capacity, increasing the number of vehicles passing through per hour from approximately 6,000 to around 9,000.
Authorities believe the upgrade will also improve average vehicle speeds at the junction. Current speeds of 15 to 20 kilometres per hour could rise to between 40 and 45 kilometres per hour once the project is completed.
The proposals were discussed during meetings with the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency and the Walton Cantonment Board, both of which are expected to play key roles in implementing the project.
Officials say the planned improvements will help reduce lengthy traffic queues that often extend between 400 and 600 metres during peak hours, providing relief to thousands of commuters who travel through the corridor every day.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to improve Lahore’s urban mobility infrastructure and address growing traffic challenges across the city.
