PSCA to Launch Signal-Free Corridor for Ambulances in Lahore

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has announced a new signal-free corridor system designed to prioritize Rescue 1122 ambulances and other emergency vehicles, aiming to significantly reduce response times during life-threatening situations.

Under the new plan, Rescue 1122 vehicle data will be integrated with the Safe Cities network. Once an ambulance is detected approaching an intersection, traffic signals will automatically turn green, allowing the vehicle to pass without delays caused by congestion or traffic jams.

Officials said the system will rely on AI-powered surveillance cameras installed across the city. These cameras will be able to identify emergency vehicle number plates from a distance of up to 400 meters, ensuring timely coordination with traffic control systems.

Authorities highlighted that traffic congestion has long been a major obstacle in emergency medical response, often delaying ambulances carrying patients and injured individuals to hospitals. The new system is expected to improve survival chances by ensuring faster access to medical care.

A dedicated mobile application has also been developed to support the project. Officials confirmed that a test run of the system will take place this week, while full-scale implementation is expected after the integration of PSCA and Rescue 1122 databases later this month.

The initiative is being seen as a major step toward smart traffic management in Lahore, combining artificial intelligence and real-time monitoring to improve emergency response efficiency and urban mobility.
