Punjab to Introduce 2,000 Electric Buses Provincewide

The Punjab government has unveiled plans to significantly expand its public transport network by adding 2,000 electric buses during the next fiscal year. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize transportation services, improve commuting facilities, and promote environmentally friendly travel across the province.

According to proposals prepared by the Transport Department, transport-related development projects worth more than Rs200 billion have been recommended for the upcoming fiscal year. A major portion of this investment will be directed toward introducing electric buses in various cities to provide cleaner and more efficient public transportation.

In addition to the electric bus project, the government has identified several large-scale transport schemes as priority initiatives for the coming year. These include the Lahore-Rawalpindi fast train project, the Murree glass train, and the upgradation of eight railway tracks across Punjab. Officials believe these projects will strengthen the province’s transportation infrastructure and improve connectivity between major urban centers.

The government is also preparing to launch 50,000 electric bikes for students to facilitate affordable and sustainable travel. Another proposal includes providing 5,000 electric taxis to unemployed youth, creating new employment opportunities while encouraging the use of eco-friendly vehicles.

In Lahore, authorities are planning to make the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system operational between Kalma Chowk and Istanbul Chowk. Similar modern public transport systems are also being considered for Gujranwala and Faisalabad to improve mobility in rapidly growing cities.

Officials said these projects are designed to offer citizens faster, safer, and more reliable transportation options. The shift toward electric vehicles is also expected to reduce environmental pollution and lower fuel consumption.

The planned investments reflect the government’s commitment to transforming Punjab’s transport sector through modern technology and sustainable solutions. Once implemented, the projects are expected to ease traffic congestion, improve travel standards, and provide long-term benefits to commuters across the province.
