The Government of Pakistan has invited expressions of interest for the privatization of three major power distribution companies. These include FESCO, GEPCO, and IESCO. The Government aims to attract private investment and improve efficiency in the power sector.
The Government plans to sell between 51 percent and 100 percent shares in these companies. Successful investors will also be given full administrative control. Officials say this step is part of broader energy sector reforms.
The companies included in the process are Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO).
According to the Privatization Commission, different deadlines have been set for investors. FESCO submissions will close on July 7, 2026. GEPCO applications will be accepted until August 6, 2026. IESCO deadlines end on September 7, 2026.
The Government has also made it mandatory for applicants to submit a non-refundable processing fee of Rs. 1.4 million. This fee applies to each company separately.
An online briefing session will be held on June 3, 2026. The session will be conducted via Zoom. It will guide investors on the requirements and bidding process.
FESCO currently serves more than 5.7 million consumers in central Punjab. GEPCO supplies electricity to Gujranwala, Sialkot, and nearby areas. IESCO provides power to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said the Government is focused on improving service delivery in the power distribution system. They added that privatization will help reduce operational losses. It is also expected to improve financial performance.
The Government believes that private sector involvement will support long-term reforms. It may also help address Pakistan’s rising circular debt issue.
Authorities said the plan is designed to modernize electricity distribution. It will also strengthen accountability and efficiency in operations.
Experts believe this move could attract significant investment if implemented successfully. They say better management may improve electricity supply and reduce system inefficiencies.
