Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has announced a major railway modernization project across the province. The plan includes upgrading 1,600 kilometers of railway tracks in Punjab.
Officials said the project is aimed at improving transport infrastructure and connectivity. The upgraded railway network is expected to benefit more than 80 million citizens.
The announcement was made during a meeting with Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi. Both leaders reviewed progress on multiple railway upgradation projects across key routes in Punjab.
The meeting also included discussions on eight important railway corridors. These routes are part of a wider strategy to improve travel efficiency and passenger services.
A key focus of the discussion was the proposed Lahore–Rawalpindi fast train project. Officials described it as a major step toward modernizing the railway system in the province.
Marriyum Aurangzeb said the railway upgrades are being carried out under the direction of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. She added that international railway systems were studied before finalizing the development plan.
According to her, the upgraded railway routes will improve connectivity between cities and regions. This will help strengthen transport links across Punjab.
The project covers several major railway sections. These include Shahdara to Narowal, Narowal to Sialkot, Lala Musa, Malikwal, and Sargodha routes.
Other included sections are Faisalabad to Chak Jhumra and Shaheenabad. The railway lines of Shorkot and Jhang are also part of the modernization plan.
In addition, cities such as Sheikhupura, Jaranwala, Raiwind, Pakpattan, Lodhran, Kot Addu, and Dera Ghazi Khan are included in the railway upgrade network.
Officials said the upgraded railway infrastructure will improve travel time and operational efficiency. It is also expected to enhance passenger comfort and safety.
The government believes the project will significantly improve Punjab’s transport system. The railway modernization is considered one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in recent years.
