Pakistan’s national space agency, Suparco, has issued its astronomical forecast regarding the expected sighting of the Zilhajj 1447 Hijri moon and the likely dates for Eid in the country.
According to a spokesperson for Suparco, the new moon is expected to be born on May 17, 2026, at approximately 1:01am. Based on astronomical calculations, the moon’s age by sunset on the same day is expected to be around 18 hours and 30 minutes, creating favorable conditions for visibility.
The agency explained that coastal regions of Pakistan are expected to experience a gap of nearly 60 minutes between sunset and moonset. Officials said this duration significantly improves the possibility of crescent visibility if weather conditions remain clear and skies are unobstructed.
Based on these scientific projections, Suparco has predicted that the first day of Zilhajj is likely to fall on Monday, May 18, 2026. As a result, Eid-ul-Azha is expected to be observed across Pakistan on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Officials clarified that these predictions are based entirely on astronomical data and modern scientific observations. The agency said moon sighting forecasts help provide an early indication for the public and authorities regarding important Islamic dates, including Eid celebrations.
However, Suparco also emphasized that the final decision regarding the beginning of Zilhajj and the official date of Eid will be announced by Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committee is responsible for verifying moon sighting testimonies received from different regions of the country before making an official declaration.
Every year, millions of Muslims across Pakistan eagerly wait for the announcement of Eid dates, especially Eid-ul-Azha, which is celebrated with religious gatherings and animal sacrifices. The festival holds great importance for Muslims and is observed nationwide with special prayers and family traditions.
Authorities said weather conditions, visibility, and verified witness reports will ultimately determine the official moon sighting decision. Until then, Suparco’s forecast serves as an early scientific estimate for the expected dates of Zilhajj and Eid in Pakistan.
