A Major Court Challenge has been filed in Pakistan against the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices. The case has been submitted to the Federal Constitutional Court. It questions the legality and fairness of repeated fuel price hikes.
The petition names the Government of Pakistan and the Secretary of the Establishment Division as respondents. It argues that rising fuel costs are causing serious hardship for citizens.
The petitioner has requested the court to fix petrol and diesel prices at Rs. 200 per litre. This demand is part of a wider Major Court Challenge aimed at reducing inflation pressure on the public.
The plea also asks the court to direct the government to import petroleum products from Iran. It further suggests securing fuel from Gulf countries at lower and concessional rates.
According to the petition, petrol prices nearing Rs. 400 per litre are unfair in a developing country. It claims that such high rates are making daily life difficult for ordinary people.
The petitioner also criticizes the government’s justification for price increases. It argues that reasons such as global conflicts, the Strait of Hormuz situation, and IMF conditions are being overused.
This Major Court Challenge comes shortly after the government announced a fresh hike in fuel prices. The increase was officially notified on Thursday night.
Under the latest revision, petrol prices increased by Rs. 6.51 per litre starting May 1, 2026. Diesel prices were raised by Rs. 19.39 per litre.
These increases are expected to impact transport fares, goods delivery, agriculture costs, and industrial production. Experts say fuel price changes often lead to broader inflation in the country.
The petition highlights that the rising cost of fuel is directly affecting household budgets. It argues that the government must take urgent steps to control inflation.
The court has been requested to intervene and provide relief to consumers. The Major Court Challenge seeks not only price control but also a review of fuel import policies.
If accepted, the case could influence future petroleum pricing decisions. It may also lead to wider discussions on energy policy and economic management in Pakistan.
