The Punjab government is preparing to launch the Automated Rapid Transport (ART) system. The project is part of a wider plan to improve public transport across Punjab.
Officials said the project has already been approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. It is expected to cost around Rs. 6 billion. Authorities are aiming to make it operational before June.
The initiative is designed to reduce traffic pressure in major cities of Punjab. It also aims to provide faster and more efficient travel for commuters.
Route and Service Plan
The ART system will operate between CBD Kalma Chowk and Istanbul Chowk. The route will pass through important roads in Punjab, including Main Boulevard Gulberg and Jail Road Canal.
The system will use three-coach trains. Each train will carry around 270 passengers.
Trains will run every 15 to 20 minutes. Officials estimate that nearly 18,000 passengers will use the system daily.
The project is expected to improve daily commuting in busy areas of Punjab.
Technology and Operations
The trains will be supplied by CRRC Corporation Limited. A local company will manage operations and system control.
Officials said the ART system will use electric power. It will also include solar energy support to reduce fuel usage.
The system is designed to reduce reliance on conventional transport fuel in Punjab. It will also help reduce environmental impact in urban areas.
Transport Modernization in Punjab
The ART system is part of a five-year transport development plan in Punjab. It was approved last year as a modern mass transit project.
Officials said similar systems are already in use in countries like Malaysia, the UAE, and Qatar. The goal is to introduce similar modern transport solutions in Punjab.
The project reflects the government’s focus on upgrading urban mobility. It also aims to bring safer and cleaner transport options to the province.
Delays and Future Expansion
Although approved earlier, the project faced delays in implementation. However, work has now accelerated to complete the system on time.
Authorities said Punjab is planning more transport upgrades in the future. The ART system is expected to be the first step in a larger modernization program.
