The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) recorded losses of around Rs. 500 billion between 2015 and 2023, officials told the Senate Standing Committee on Privatization on Monday. The government said the airline’s continuous financial struggles prompted the decision to privatize it.
Privatization Secretary Usman Bajwa explained that PIA was losing nearly Rs. 100 billion annually. These losses have placed a heavy burden on the national exchequer, making privatization a necessary step to improve efficiency and financial stability.
Officials pointed out that weak management has been the airline’s biggest challenge. Poor oversight and operational inefficiencies prevented PIA from becoming profitable over the years. Leadership issues, delayed decision-making, and lack of strategic planning contributed to the airline’s declining performance.
The briefing also highlighted PIA’s valuation. Previously, the airline’s net worth had dropped to just Rs. 9 billion. However, after a detailed revaluation of its assets, PIA’s value increased to around Rs. 41 billion. This revaluation improved the airline’s attractiveness for private investors as part of the privatization process.
Authorities said privatization is intended to bring in professional management, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce the government’s financial burden. Officials stressed that private investment could help PIA modernize its fleet, expand its routes, and improve customer service.
The government also emphasized that PIA’s privatization would follow a transparent and structured process. It is expected to attract national and international investors who can inject capital and expertise into the airline.
Officials reassured that the process aims to ensure PIA continues to operate safely and efficiently while reducing annual losses. Privatization is seen as a critical step to transform the struggling airline into a profitable and competitive entity in the aviation sector.
