Pakistan in Final Round of 5G Auction for 3500 MHz

Pakistan has entered the final stage of the second phase of its 5G spectrum auction, with bidding now underway to determine positioning in the 3500 MHz band.

The bidding process was formally launched by Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, alongside the IT Secretary and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman.

Chairman Rehman explained that today’s bidding focuses solely on spectrum positioning. He confirmed that the process is being conducted with full transparency under the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The 2600 MHz band positioning has already been finalized, while bids for the 3500 MHz band are ongoing. Results for both bands will be announced together once the process is completed.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima described the auction as historic, highlighting that Pakistan had previously operated with only 274 MHz of spectrum, placing the country among those with the lowest spectrum availability globally. She noted that this auction significantly improves Pakistan’s position, moving it into the middle tier and marking the official entry into the 5G era.

The minister emphasized that 5G technology will benefit multiple sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, trade, and the economy. She also pointed out the importance of technology for national security, citing Pakistan’s success in last year’s “Battle of Truth” on the cyber front. The government aims to leverage the new spectrum to improve internet connectivity and support the country’s digital growth.
