Fresh rain and snowfall continued across Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday, triggering landslides that blocked sections of the Karakoram Highway between Diamer district and Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The road closures left thousands of passengers stranded overnight at multiple locations while travelling between Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country. Among those affected were patients, elderly citizens, and families with children who were unable to continue their journeys due to blocked routes.
Police officials reported that landslides occurred at several points across Diamer District and Kohistan areas on Tuesday, with debris covering major portions of the highway from Barseen in Upper Kohistan to the Pattan area in Lower Kohistan.
According to Diamer Deputy Commissioner Attaur Rehman Kakar, the highway has been closed at multiple locations because of continuous landslides caused by ongoing rainfall and snowfall in mountainous regions.
Authorities said debris removal operations will begin once weather conditions improve, with the Frontier Works Organisation assigned to carry out clearance work and restore traffic flow.
Officials added that most parts of Gilgit-Baltistan experienced rainfall over the past two days, while higher-altitude areas received fresh snowfall, creating travel difficulties and disrupting road links between remote communities.
