Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Friday approved a monthly stipend of Rs70,000 for agriculture interns to modernize farming and engage youth.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, where officials discussed linking young graduates with practical agricultural training and innovation-driven farming models across Punjab.
Under the “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” program, agriculture interns will manage farms and spearhead modern initiatives while gaining hands-on field experience. The initiative aims to empower educated youth and transform traditional farming practices into technology-driven systems.
The provincial government also approved rooftop hydroponic farming projects for the first time. Officials said between 280 and 350 plants can be cultivated on rooftops as small as two marlas using specially designed structures and polythene sheets.
Initially, ten pilot hydroponic projects will be launched in Lahore in collaboration with housing societies. Authorities believe urban farming will help increase food production and encourage sustainable agricultural practices.
To promote environmentally friendly farming, the government approved the solarization of 10,000 diesel tube wells across the province. The move is expected to reduce fuel costs for farmers and cut carbon emissions.
Under the Punjab Agriculture Mechanization Project, 28,000 super seeders will be distributed by 2028 to improve crop residue management and tackle environmental pollution caused by stubble burning.
The chief minister also approved Phase IV of the CM Green Tractor Program. Subsidies for high-horsepower tractors will be Rs1.5 million, while subsidies for low-horsepower tractors have been increased from Rs500,000 to Rs700,000.
Additionally, Punjab will introduce ground recharge wells for on-farm rainwater harvesting for the first time. These wells will store rainwater and improve water availability for agricultural use.
Officials said the combined initiatives are designed to modernize agriculture, promote sustainability, and create employment opportunities for young people across the province.
