Bill Gates has publicly admitted that his past association with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was a “huge mistake,” expressing regret over the relationship and its negative impact on his philanthropic organisation.
During a staff town hall meeting, details of which were reviewed by major media outlets including The Wall Street Journal and reported by Agence France-Presse, Gates apologised for maintaining contact with Epstein and for introducing him to foundation executives. He accepted responsibility for the consequences and described his decision to spend time with Epstein as a serious lapse in judgment.
Recent documents released by the US Department of Justice mention Bill Gates in connection with Epstein and outline associations involving high-profile individuals. Among the released materials was a draft email in which Epstein made allegations about Gates’ personal life, including claims about extramarital relationships.
Addressing employees, Bill Gates confirmed that he had affairs with two Russian women but strongly denied any involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities or any contact with his victims. He stated clearly that he observed nothing illegal and did not participate in any wrongdoing. Epstein died in 2019 in a New York jail while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Bill Gates explained that his relationship with Epstein began in 2011, years after Epstein had pleaded guilty to charges related to soliciting a minor. Although aware of Epstein’s legal history, Gates admitted he did not fully investigate his background at the time. He also acknowledged that his then-wife raised concerns in 2013, yet contact continued for some time afterward.
The foundation confirmed that Bill Gates addressed the matter openly during its regular meeting and accepted responsibility for his actions.
