The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase in electricity prices for consumers across Pakistan. The increase is set at Rs0.28 per unit and will apply for one month only. This change comes under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism for December.
According to an official notification, Nepra confirmed that the revised electricity rate will apply to consumers of K-Electric and all power distribution companies. The additional charge will appear in electricity bills issued during the February billing cycle.
The decision was taken after a public hearing held by Nepra. The hearing reviewed a request submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). The CPPA had requested an increase of Rs0.48 per unit based on fuel cost variations during December.
After examining the data, Nepra approved a lower increase than requested. The authority reviewed fuel prices, generation costs, and operational records. Based on this review, Nepra concluded that a Rs0.28 per unit adjustment was justified.
Officials stated that the monthly fuel adjustment system helps reflect changes in global fuel prices. This mechanism allows utilities to recover additional costs or pass on savings to consumers. However, such adjustments often lead to higher bills during months of increased fuel expenses.
Nepra clarified that the latest increase is temporary. It will only apply for the current billing cycle. No long-term change to base electricity tariffs has been announced at this stage.
Consumers have expressed concern over rising electricity costs. Many households are already facing financial pressure due to inflation. Energy experts say fuel adjustments have become frequent due to reliance on imported fuels.
Nepra maintained that the approval followed legal procedures and transparent review. The authority emphasized that all decisions aim to balance consumer interests and sector sustainability.
The CPPA plays a key role in purchasing electricity on behalf of distribution companies. Its requests are reviewed independently by Nepra before approval. This process ensures accountability and regulatory oversight.
The government has not issued any separate statement on relief measures related to this increase. Consumers are advised to check their February bills carefully for the updated charges.

As fuel prices remain volatile, future adjustments cannot be ruled out. Nepra is expected to continue monthly reviews based on fuel cost data and power generation reports.
