Punjab CM Suspends Basant Festival After Deadly Rawalpindi Blast

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has canceled the Basant festival celebrations across the province, including the event planned at Liberty Chowk in Lahore. The decision follows a deadly bomb blast in Rawalpindi, highlighting security concerns.

In her statement, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized national unity against extremists. “The nation stands shoulder to shoulder with our armed forces,” she said, urging the public to remain vigilant.

Authorities reported that a suicide bombing occurred at a mosque in Rawalpindi during Friday prayers. Security agencies and police have launched operations in the area. Officials confirmed that the attacker was linked to the extremist group Fitna al-Khawarij.

District administration sources stated that the blast killed 31 people, while 169 others were injured and admitted to local hospitals. The attacker reportedly detonated explosives after being stopped at the mosque gate, killing himself in the process.

The decision to cancel the Basant festival was made to ensure public safety amid heightened security risks. Authorities stressed that such measures are temporary and are aimed at protecting citizens from potential threats.

The Basant festival, traditionally celebrated with kite flying and cultural events, attracts thousands of participants in Lahore and other cities. Organizers said that this year’s celebrations would not take place due to the security situation and the need to prioritize public safety.

Security experts noted that recent extremist incidents have increased the risk of public gatherings. They advised that similar events should be postponed until authorities confirm that it is safe to resume large-scale celebrations.
