PM Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of declining Pakistan exports and ordered senior officials to engage directly with exporters to resolve key trade challenges.
Following the prime minister’s instructions, Federal Secretary for Commerce Jawad Paul and Federal Secretary for Industries Saif Anjum visited Karachi. They held a detailed meeting with exporters at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) headquarters, also known as Federation House.
The meeting included officials from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), industry and trade departments, and business leaders from multiple sectors, who joined both in person and online.
Exporters Raise Concerns
Representatives from textile, fruits and vegetables, tourism, and logistics sectors briefed officials on challenges affecting exports. Rising energy costs, operational inefficiencies, and higher business expenses were cited as major reasons for declining Pakistan exports. FPCCI leaders noted that soaring energy prices are reducing the competitiveness of Pakistani exporters in international markets.
Government Support and New Initiatives
Addressing the participants, Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul said that PM Shehbaz Sharif is personally overseeing efforts to revive exports. Direct engagement with exporters is part of a broader government strategy to improve industrial performance and trade.
Industries Secretary Saif Anjum announced plans to establish a new export processing zone on 6,000 acres of land belonging to Pakistan Steel Mills. The zone aims to provide modern infrastructure and incentives to boost export-oriented manufacturing.
FPCCI’s senior vice president also questioned the performance of Pakistan’s trade and commercial officers abroad, stressing the need for better market access and export promotion. Officials assured that these concerns would be reviewed as part of the overall export revival plan.
