US troops in Syria come under attack, official reports

U.S. troops in northeastern Syria were targeted in a drone attack, though initial reports suggest there were no injuries. The incident, which took place at Rumalyn Landing Zone where U.S. and coalition forces are stationed, marks the second attack on U.S. forces in the Middle East in recent days. This comes amid heightened tensions in the region following recent events involving Iran and its allies.

The region is on edge after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Iran-backed Hamas, in Tehran on July 31, an attack that Iran has attributed to Israel. The killing of Haniyeh, along with the death of Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander of Hezbollah, in an Israeli strike on Beirut, has raised concerns that the ongoing conflict in Gaza could escalate into a broader Middle Eastern war.

Iran has accused the U.S. of being complicit in Haniyeh’s assassination due to its support for Israel, further straining relations in the region. The U.S. military is conducting a damage assessment following the drone attack in Syria, and medical evaluations are ongoing.

Earlier in the week, five U.S. personnel were injured when Katyusha rockets targeted the Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq, an attack attributed to Iran-backed proxies. The U.S. maintains 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq, primarily to advise and assist local forces in preventing a resurgence of the Islamic State.
