Twitter Introduces Audio and Video Call Features

Twitter, now rebranded as X, has been discussing the introduction of video and audio call capabilities for some time, and it is now delivering on that promise. The social media giant has rolled out the ability to make calls, although this feature is currently available exclusively on iOS devices.

In fact, the feature has been quietly available since yesterday, with some users noticing it in the direct message section of the app, although there was no official announcement at the time.

The company’s owner, Elon Musk, officially announced the feature just six hours ago on X, clarifying that it’s an early version of the capability.

The iOS app now allows users to “elevate their messaging experience” by initiating audio or video calls. Users can customize their preferences for receiving audio and video calls, whether from contacts in their address book, people they follow, or verified users.

In August, X CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed the impending launch of video calls without specifying the exact release date. She noted that this addition was part of the platform’s transformation into an “everything app.”

It’s currently unclear whether this new feature will be accessible to all users or limited to X Premium members.

Elon Musk initially took to X to clarify the functionality of this feature. He mentioned that it would be compatible with iOS, Android, Mac, and PC and emphasized that users wouldn’t require a phone number to use it. Musk described this enhancement as the platform’s transition into an “effective global address book.”

As Musk stated, this is just an early version of the feature, implying that it will continue to evolve over time, although specific details about its future development are not yet available.
