The spillways of Tarbela Dam were opened at 11:00 am on Monday to safely manage rising water levels. Authorities expect the move to increase the flow of the River Indus and have issued safety advisories for people living downstream.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the discharge from Tarbela Dam is expected to increase the river’s flow from about 220,000 cusecs to nearly 245,000 cusecs. The controlled release is aimed at maintaining safe water levels inside the reservoir while reducing pressure on the dam.
The higher discharge is expected to raise water levels in the River Indus. As a result, the NDMA has warned that people living near the river and connected waterways could face increased risks. The authority advised residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary movement near flowing water.
The NDMA urged people to stay away from the River Indus, streams, canals, and other water channels during the increased discharge period. It also asked residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious and closely monitor official updates.
Officials said the decision to open the spillways was taken as part of routine water management measures. The step is intended to safely regulate the reservoir level while ensuring that downstream conditions remain under close observation.
The disaster management authority confirmed that all relevant federal, provincial, and local government departments were informed before the release of water. This advance coordination was carried out to improve preparedness and allow authorities to respond quickly if conditions change.
Emergency response agencies and local administrations have also been advised to stay ready. They will continue monitoring water levels and provide assistance if needed. Authorities said timely coordination is important to reduce the risk of damage in vulnerable areas.
Residents have been asked to cooperate with local officials and strictly follow all safety instructions. The NDMA emphasized that ignoring warnings or entering flooded areas could put lives at risk. People were also advised to keep children away from rivers and water channels during the period of increased flow.
The opening of the spillways comes as Tarbela Dam continues to manage seasonal inflows. Water authorities regularly monitor reservoir levels during periods of heavy inflow to ensure the safe operation of the dam and the protection of downstream communities.
