Twitter (X) Will Include Features For Making Audio And Video Calls

Twitter, now rebranded as X, has previously announced its intentions to introduce audio and video calling features multiple times. However, these plans have faced delays or cancellations. Now, it appears that these features are finally becoming a reality.

The announcement comes directly from X’s owner, Elon Musk, who revealed that both audio and video calls will be supported on phones and computers. This functionality will be available on Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS devices.

Musk emphasized that this feature won’t require phone numbers, as X will serve as a global address book through its usernames. He described this combination of factors as unique.

Although Musk didn’t specify a launch date for this feature, he confirmed that it’s in the works and will be “coming soon,” raising expectations for its imminent release.

As previously mentioned, this isn’t the first time X has discussed the addition of audio and video calls. In the past month, the company’s designer shared screenshots that offer a glimpse of the upcoming feature’s appearance. Refer to the tweet (or ‘post’) below.

As depicted in the image, your X direct messages (DMs) will display a phone receiver icon in the upper right corner once the feature is rolled out. Tapping on this icon will provide options for initiating audio or video calls.

The video call interface will include the familiar call layout, featuring a picture-in-picture screen showcasing both your own video feed and your contact’s video. Buttons for ending the call, disabling your camera, muting yourself, or turning off speakers will also be available.

It’s important to note that the final version of this feature might undergo some changes from what is currently shown.
