T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan's Path to Super 8 Qualification

After suffering consecutive defeats, Pakistan is now in a complex situation as they rely not just on victories in their next two matches but also on other teams’ performances to advance from the group stage into the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.

The Men in Green are often criticized for finding themselves in such a precarious scenario in ICC tournaments where they depend on other teams to progress.

In Group A, Pakistan faces competition from India, the US, Canada, and Ireland. With zero points and no victories in their previous two games against the US and India, Pakistan is facing an uphill battle. Meanwhile, India and the US lead the points table with 4 points each, having won their previous two matches.

Pakistan’s fate now hinges not only on winning their next two games against Ireland and Canada but also on the US losing their next two matches against India and Ireland.

Even if Pakistan manages to win both matches, they must also ensure a better net run rate (NRR) than the US to secure a spot in the Super Eight stage. However, if the US wins one more match, Pakistan’s chances will be dashed regardless of NRR.

Both of Pakistan’s losses in the World Cup were closely contested. One ended in a Super Over defeat against the US, while the other, against India, resulted in a mere six-run loss despite Pakistan’s bowlers restricting India to 119 runs. However, despite the bowlers’ impressive performance, Jasprit Bumrah’s crucial wickets and his figures of 3-14 in four overs proved decisive as Pakistan fell short by just a few runs, ending on 113-7.

In the match against the US, which ended in a thrilling Super Over, Mohammad Amir bowled first, and the USA scored 18-1. However, Pakistan could only manage 13-1 in response at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.
