Two Russian LGBT organisations have been officially labeled “extremist,” marking a further escalation in the country’s tightening restrictions on the LGBTQ+ community.
The groups affected include the Moscow Community Center for LGBT+ Initiatives and ParniPlus, which focuses on reporting issues related to LGBT health and rights. Despite separate court rulings against them, both organisations have indicated that they intend to continue their activities.
In a public statement, ParniPlus described the decision as another move toward criminalising LGBTQ visibility, independent journalism, and public support for the community within Russia. The organisation argued that such actions are part of a broader effort to silence voices advocating for equality and rights.
The latest rulings follow the government’s 2023 ban on what it terms the “LGBT movement.” This policy forms part of a wider set of measures restricting expressions related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Critics argue that these steps reflect a conservative policy direction under President Vladimir Putin.
In a related development, authorities recently questioned employees at one of Russia’s largest publishing companies over alleged “LGBT propaganda” found in its book catalogue. This indicates that the crackdown is expanding beyond organisations to include media and publishing sectors as well.
International human rights groups have raised serious concerns about these developments. Human Rights Watch stated earlier this year that Russian authorities are increasingly using legal mechanisms to suppress and marginalise LGBT individuals and their supporters. The organisation warned that such actions undermine fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, association, and protection from discrimination.
Overall, the situation highlights growing pressure on LGBTQ+ advocacy and visibility in Russia, with legal and institutional measures continuing to restrict public discourse and community support.
