Public transport fares rise following increase in petrol prices

Public transport fares in Lahore have been increased after the latest rise in petroleum prices, adding further financial pressure on commuters already struggling with inflation and increasing living costs.

According to reports, fares for public transport have gone up by 5%, while rates for goods transport and mini Mazda vehicles have increased by 10%. The increase came shortly after the federal government announced another hike in petrol and diesel prices.

Passengers expressed frustration over the sudden increase, claiming that many transporters were charging higher fares without any official notification or approval from the authorities. Commuters said the arbitrary fare hikes were creating additional difficulties for ordinary citizens already facing economic challenges.

Many residents urged the government to take immediate action and ensure fair transport charges, arguing that continuous inflation and rising fuel prices have severely impacted household budgets.

Despite the increase in fares by transporters, the Punjab Transport Department and the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) have not yet formally approved or announced revised fare rates.

The Punjab government has taken notice of the unauthorized fare hike and directed deputy commissioners and Regional Transport Authorities across the province to ensure implementation of officially approved fares only.

RTA Lahore Secretary Rana Mohsin confirmed that a consultative meeting with transporters had been called to discuss the issue. He stated that the government would make a final decision regarding any official increase in transport fares after consultations with stakeholders.

The situation developed after the federal government increased petroleum prices for the fourth time since tensions between Iran and Israel began affecting international oil markets.

Under the latest revision, the price of petrol was increased by Rs14.92 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs414.78 per litre. Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel was raised by Rs15 per litre, taking it to Rs414.58 per litre.

The government later issued an official notification confirming the latest increase in fuel prices, which has triggered concerns about further inflation and rising transportation costs across the country.
