President Biden Sets TikTok Ban Deadline in US

US President Joe Biden has officially signed a bill requiring TikTok to transfer control to a US company within 9 to 12 months, or face a ban in America. The bill, included in a foreign aid package, has become law following Biden’s approval.

ByteDance has long faced pressure to relinquish TikTok in the US, and with the bill now enacted, the countdown has begun for the Chinese company to comply or risk losing access to one of its largest markets.

While there were concerns the legislation might stall in the Senate after clearing the House, strategic political maneuvers ensured its passage to Biden’s desk. The House merged the TikTok bill with foreign aid to US allies, shortening the divestment timeline from six months and prompting the Senate to review both measures concurrently. The extended divestment period also swayed previously undecided lawmakers to support the bill.

TikTok spokesperson Alex Haurek stated the company plans to challenge the law in court. Legal proceedings could potentially delay enforcement, prolonging the timeline. Moreover, uncertainties loom over China’s response and whether it will permit ByteDance to sell TikTok, particularly its prized algorithm essential for user retention.
