The Paris Olympics have kicked off with two soccer matches, two days ahead of the grand opening ceremony in the French capital. The initial events featured Spain’s men’s team playing against Uzbekistan at Parc des Princes, and Argentina facing Morocco in Saint-Etienne.

Argentina’s match was marred by controversy due to a video involving a song with problematic content, leading to boos from the crowd. In another incident, Charlotte Dujardin, Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, withdrew from the Games following a scandal involving video footage of her whipping a horse’s legs, which was condemned by equestrian officials.

The Games, which are being held as the first major post-pandemic Olympics, have also been affected by COVID-19. Three more Australian women’s water polo players tested positive, bringing the total to five cases.

Security remains a significant concern, with heightened measures in place due to geopolitical tensions. The first security test will be Israel’s match against Mali, with thousands of police officers deployed.

In addition to soccer, Rugby Sevens, handball, archery, and shooting will debut over the coming days. The opening ceremony on Friday will feature floating parades on the Seine and is expected to be a grand spectacle.

Doping issues have also surfaced, with potential implications for French fencer Ysaora Thibus and ongoing disputes involving Chinese swimmers. Security concerns include the arrest of a Russian suspect allegedly planning to destabilize the Games.

Looking ahead, France has been tentatively chosen to host the 2030 Winter Games, with Salt Lake City awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics. The opening ceremony’s details, including potential participation by Canadian singer Celine Dion, remain closely guarded.
