Pakistan has announced plans to gradually replace traditional machine-readable passports (MRPs) with a fully digital e-passport system. The new initiative will allow citizens to apply for passports online, pay fees digitally and receive their passports at home, making the process faster and more convenient.
Director General of Passports Muhammad Abdul Khaliq said the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to modernize passport services and simplify the application process through digital technology. The project aims to reduce paperwork and improve access to passport services across the country.
Speaking on ARY News’ Bakhabar Savera, Khaliq said Pakistan launched its first e-passport in 2022 before upgrading the system in 2025 to meet international standards. The upgraded e-passports include laser engraving technology and digital security certificates, making them more secure and resistant to forgery.
He said the government is also completing Pakistan’s registration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Once the process is finalized, Pakistani e-passports will become more widely compatible with automated e-gates at airports around the world, allowing faster immigration clearance for travelers.
Under the new system, citizens will be able to submit passport applications through a mobile app integrated with NADRA’s Pak ID platform. Applicants will also be able to upload photographs and supporting documents, pay passport fees online and receive their passports at their registered addresses.
Khaliq said applicants experiencing biometric verification or online submission issues will still have the option of completing the process at passport offices or NADRA centres. This hybrid approach is intended to ensure that digital services remain accessible to all citizens.
The Director General added that authorities will accept digital documents where applicable and may conduct online interviews if required. Passport fees will also be payable through mobile banking applications and digital wallets, further streamlining the application process.
The planned transition to a fully digital passport system is expected to improve efficiency, reduce processing times and bring Pakistan’s passport services closer to international digital standards while making travel documentation more convenient for citizens.
