Petrol Price Rises 77 Paisa, Diesel Falls Rs1.03 Per Litre

The federal government has increased the price of petrol by 77 paisa per litre while reducing the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.03 per litre for September 2026.

According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the revised petroleum prices will take effect from September 1, 2026, and will remain applicable during the current pricing period unless revised in the next fortnightly review.

The latest adjustment brings the price of petrol to Rs342.79 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has been reduced to Rs370.41 per litre.

Petrol Price Increased

The government has raised the price of petrol from Rs342.02 to Rs342.79 per litre, resulting in an increase of 77 paisa per litre.

Petrol is primarily used by private vehicles, motorcycles and other small vehicles across the country. Any increase in its price can directly affect the monthly transportation expenses of households and individuals.

The latest increase comes despite the relatively small size of the adjustment, as petrol prices remain a key concern for consumers because of their impact on transportation and other household costs.

Diesel Price Reduced

In contrast, the government has reduced the price of high-speed diesel by Rs1.03 per litre.

The price of HSD has been lowered from Rs371.44 to Rs370.41 per litre.

Diesel is widely used by public transport operators, commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, agricultural machinery and several other sectors of the economy.

The reduction is therefore expected to provide limited relief to transport and agriculture-related users, although the overall impact will depend on other operating and business costs.

New Petroleum Prices

The revised prices effective from September 1 are:

Petroleum ProductPrevious PriceNew PriceChange
PetrolRs342.02/litreRs342.79/litre+Rs0.77
High-Speed DieselRs371.44/litreRs370.41/litre-Rs1.03

The changes reflect the government’s latest fortnightly petroleum price review.

OGRA Recommendations Considered

The latest revision has been made under the government’s petroleum pricing mechanism following recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).

The government reviews petroleum prices periodically to determine whether changes are required based on the applicable pricing mechanism.

The revised rates will remain effective from September 1 unless the government announces another adjustment during the next fortnightly review.

Impact on Consumers and Economy

The increase in petrol prices is likely to affect motorists and motorcycle users, particularly those who rely heavily on private transportation for commuting.

Meanwhile, the reduction in diesel prices could offer some relief to businesses and sectors that depend heavily on diesel-powered transportation and machinery.

Fuel prices also have broader implications for the economy because transportation costs can influence the prices of goods and services.

For consumers, the latest revision means petrol has become slightly more expensive while diesel users will receive a modest reduction in fuel costs from September 1.
