NDMA Issues Heavy Rain and Flood Alert Across Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and possible landslides in several regions of Pakistan from July 6 to July 10. Authorities have urged the public and relevant departments to remain alert as a strong weather system is expected to affect large parts of the country.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), the new weather system is likely to enter northern Pakistan on July 6. It is expected to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Potohar region, and northeastern Punjab.

The NDMA said intermittent rainfall is forecast between July 7 and July 10, particularly across the upper catchment areas of the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers. Some areas could receive heavy downpours, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

Officials expect rainfall intensity to increase on July 7, especially in Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab, and northern Balochistan. The heavy rain may cause a rise in water inflows into Tarbela and Mangla dams, as well as slightly higher water levels in major rivers.

However, the authority clarified that there is currently no risk of major river flooding. Despite this, residents living near seasonal streams and hill torrents have been advised to remain cautious, as flash floods may develop during periods of intense rainfall.

The NDMA also warned that low-lying urban areas could experience urban flooding, while mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir face the possibility of landslides and falling rocks due to persistent rainfall.

All relevant departments have been instructed to stay prepared and respond quickly to any emergency situation. The public has been advised to monitor official weather forecasts, follow travel advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone or mountainous areas during the warning period.

Citizens are also encouraged to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application to receive the latest weather updates, emergency notifications, and safety information throughout the forecast period.
