Malala To Join New Season Of We Are Lady Parts

The British comedy series “We Are Lady Parts,” which chronicles the adventures of an all-female Muslim punk band named Lady Parts, is set to return to Peacock for its much-anticipated second season.

Starting on May 30, the platform will release all six episodes of the new season, featuring notable guest stars including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousufzai and British comedian Meera Syal.

Created by Nida Manzoor, who draws inspiration from her experiences in London’s artistic and cultural communities, the show stars Anjana Vasan as Amina Hussain, the band’s guitarist and a PhD student. Sarah Kameela Impey plays Saira, the band’s enigmatic frontwoman. The ensemble cast also includes Juliette Motamed, Faith Omole, Lucie Shorthouse, Aiysha Hart, Zaqi Ismail, and Shobu Kapoor.

First piloted in 2018 and officially launching its initial six-episode run in 2021, “We Are Lady Parts” explores themes such as friendship, familial obligations, and societal expectations placed on women. Each character’s unique backstory enriches the narrative, adding depth to the overall storyline.

Reflecting on the series, creator Nida Manzoor described the first season as a defining personal and professional experience, one that helped her find her voice and establish a creative community. With the groundwork laid in the first season, the second season was developed with greater ease, allowing for deeper exploration of the characters and an expanded musical repertoire featuring original songs and covers created by Manzoor and her siblings.

As it continues, the series not only celebrates the vibrancy of the music scene but also addresses the complexities of achieving success while maintaining artistic integrity. Manzoor looks forward to bringing the new episodes to both loyal fans and new viewers.

“We Are Lady Parts” is produced by Working Title Television (WTTV), part of Universal International Studios, under the Universal Studio Group umbrella. The first season is available for streaming on Peacock.
