Heavy rains triggered landslides that blocked the Karakoram Highway and Baltistan Road, leaving travelers stranded across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Heavy rainfall caused landslides and mudflows across Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday, blocking major roads and leaving hundreds of travelers stranded in different parts of the region.

According to local authorities and the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, the Karakoram Highway was closed after landslides and falling debris struck multiple locations between Gunar Farm and Lal Padi in the Diamer district’s Chilas area.

Officials said the National Highway Authority and other relevant agencies have launched debris removal and road clearance operations to restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.

Authorities have advised travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys and check road conditions before departing due to the ongoing weather situation.

The closure of the Karakoram Highway resulted in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the route, severely disrupting travel to and from Gilgit-Baltistan.

Meanwhile, the Baltistan Road was also blocked after landslides hit the Maloopa area in Skardu’s Roundu region. According to GBDMA officials, efforts are underway to clear the road, but passengers traveling between Baltistan and other areas remained stranded for several hours.

The disruptions come amid warnings from the National Disaster Management Authority regarding potential flooding in parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Balochistan between June 16 and June 19.

Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain cautious and follow official advisories as weather conditions continue to affect several regions across the country.
